In the late 1990s, three of Ireland’s most successful businessmen were involved in a tussle to host the Ryder Cup, the biennial match between America and Europe’s top golfers. Packaging tycoon Sir Michael Smurfit, construction magnate Hugo Flinn and car importer Tim Mahony jostled to stage the event at their respective trophy golf resorts: the K Club, Druids Glen, and Mount Juliet.
